Facebook took the internet by storm creating a huge platform to connect with mass amounts of people, originally designed for Harvard Students
Orkut was an exclusive platform that you had to be invited to but it was too exclusive turning consumers away from the platform
Myspace was the number one social media site to connect with friends until Facebook took the number one spot
Linkedin a platform for business connection
Friendster was not able to keep up with demand
Ryze was made as a business connection tool
Six Degree failed because their platform could not keep up with demand
Classmates designed to connect with old peers from High School

The need to be social

Social Media
With a built in communication system on social media platforms it entices consumers to use their platform as a way to keep in touch with peers. Platforms like Twitter and Instagram give you the ability to send images and memes to friends. Thus creating an entire conversation with an individual using the platform.
Collaboration
Working together using the internet as a medium, used for business professionals & students.
Community
Involves feeling of belonging in a group through the internet. Social media platforms have the ability to create groups with simaliar interests. You are also able to connect with people all around the world who are a part of your group.
