He wrote 14 novels in the Oz series, plus 41 other novels (not including four lost, unpublished novels), 83 short stories, over 200 poems, and at least 42 scripts. He made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen; the 1939 adaptation of the first Oz book became a landmark of 20th-century cinema.

Background Information

When a tornado rips through Kansas, Dorothy and her dog, Toto, are whisked away in their house to the magical land of Oz. They follow the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, and en route they meet a Scarecrow that needs a brain, a Tin Man missing a heart, and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage. The wizard asks the group to bring him the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West to earn his help.

Summary

Dorothy lived in a house in Kansas with uncle Henry, aunt Em and a little black dog called Toto. One day a cyclone hit the house. The wind carried it into country called OZ. the house fell on top of a bad witch. The good witch told Dorothy wear the bad witch’s shoes and how to get to the Emerald city. On the way she met the Scarecrow, a Tinman and a Cowardly lion. Dorothy and her friends went into the Emerald city. But the wizard wanted them to kill the witch of the west. After being captured by the bad witch, Dorothy chucked a bucket of water to the witch. Then she put on the black hat and call the magic monkeys to take them home. When they were in the wizard’s room, Toto ran into a screen and revealed the wizard. The next morning, the wizard gave the Scarecrow brains, the Tinman heart and make the cowardly lion brave. He made a balloon for them and led Dorothy to it. But Toto jumped out of Dorothy’s hand and chased a cat. At that moment the rope broke and the balloon flew away. Dorothy called the magic monkeys to take the good witch to her. The witch told Dorothy the lines ‘East, West – home’s the best’ and jump. When done all that Dorothy found herself back in Kansas.

Beginning

Dorthy lived in a small house in Kansas, with her uncle, aunt and a small black dog called Toto. One day uncle Henry looked at the sky then he shouted there is a cyclone coming. Toto was afraid, he ran under a bed. Dorothy picked him up and ran to the cellar. Before she got the cellar the cyclone hit the house. The house moved slowly up to the top of the cyclone. After many hours Dorothy saw trees and flowers. An old woman said Dorothy killed a bad witch. Dorothy saw a pair of red shoes and she picked up and wear them on her feet. Dorothy was in OZ. The good witch told her the wizard lived in Emerald city. Dorothy and Toto went to find the wizard.

Middle

Dorothy and Toto walked along the yellow brick road. They stopped in a field because they were tired. The scarecrow asked Dorothy to get him down the pole and wanted some brains. they slept in a small house. Next morning, they saw a Tin man and oiled him carefully. The Tin man wanted a heart. Suddenly they saw a big lion which wanted courage. The lion took them across a river and the Tin man built a boat to carry them across another river.

Dorothy and her friends saw green houses with people in green clothes. Dorothy spent a night at the house. The next day they thanked the woman and continued with their journey. They saw a city and a little man in green clothes opened the door. The man asked them put on green glass and took them into a big house. The wizard wanted to see Dorothy first. Dorothy saw a head which told her to kill the witch of the west. The Scarecrows saw a woman, the Tinman saw an animal with two heads and the Cowardly lion saw a ball of fire.

The next morning, they left the Emerald city. The green man took away their glasses and told them the way. The witch of the west had a magic eye. She called the monkey bring Dorothy and her friends. The monkeys broke the Tinman, and they took straw out of the Scarecrow. But they couldn’t hurt Dorothy and Toto because of the kiss. The monkeys picked her up carefully and brought her to the witch’s house. The witch wanted Dorothy’s red magical shoes. One day Dorothy’s left shoe fell off. The witch took it and Dorothy threw a bucket of water on top of the witch. Then the witch disappeared. She put on her red shoes and wear the black hat. She told monkeys to help her to the Emerald city. After some time they were at the door of the city.

The green guy opened the door and gave them glasses and took them to the wizard’s house. They waited for several hours and Scarecrow lost his patient. He threatened the wizard with the magic monkeys. The wizard was afraid of the monkeys and took them to the wizard’s room. Toto jumped away and hit a screen. Behind the screen was an old man with no hair. He gave the Scarecrow brains, the Tinman heart and make the cowardly lion brave. He made a balloon for them.

Ending

Dorothy picked up Toto and ran to the balloon. But before she got it , the rope broke. Dorothy called the magic monkeys to bring the witch of the south. The good witch arrived and told Dorothy to say ‘East, West – home’s the best’ and jump. When done all that Dorothy opened her eyes and found her back in Kansas.
