Discrimination
The Irene Murdoch Case: The Irene Murdoch case was a divorce case that had spread anger through the country. Irene had claimed half of the family's cattle ranch in her divorce, but had worked hard alongside her husband for a total of 25 years. Irene had thought that the work would've been 50/50 but the court had said that it was 100% her husbands farm. Irene had worked a lifetime of hard work, she was not given a fair compensation by the court because she was a female. This example of discrimination had led to women standing up and protecting their rights.
Montreal Massacre (1989): The Montreal Massacre that had happened in 1989 had involved a 25 year old man who had walked into a school and shot and killed 14 women, believing that feminists had ruined his life. This tragic incident is a prime example of discrimination and hate towards women.
Baltej Singh Dhillion And RCMP (1983): In the year 1983, Baltej Singh Dhillion had arrived in Vancouver and was quickly faced with discrimination and racism. Despite the hatred, Baltej wanted to become a Canadian police officer in the country's top of the line force called the RCMP. One of the symbols for the RCMP is a broad-brimmed hat this wouldn't be good for Baltej Singh Dhillion as he is a man who wears a Turban. Baltej was sent hate mail, threats, and had faced discrimination for not folowing RCMP "dress code" by wearing his Turban instead of the hat. In the end the charter rights and freedoms of Canada were on Baltej's side which had allowed him to become the first man in th RCMP wearing a turban.
Technology
Introduction Of Computers (1980): The first ever computer had been introduced in the year 1980 and was moved into factories, homes, and offices in Canada. Computers had changed the lives of Canadians positively and negatively.
Ingis Factory Strike (1983): The year 1983 was when the Ingis factory had experienced a strike. This strike was because of technology being introduced to Canada which is where it had taken over many employees jobs causing unemployment.
The Alberta Oil Boom: The advancement of technology had led to the Alberta oil boom. Once the discovery was made using giant drills to dig in the earth through technology, Jim Gray had been able to find this "modern day gold rush."
