Verb + particle (preposition or adverb)

What are they?

They are verbs that are accompanied by an adverb or a preposition. It is usually made up of two words, or even three.

Intransitive

Those who do not need an object. The verb and the particle are always united.

Transitive

They always need an object.

Separable

verb + object + particle.

Example:

She tried the sweater on.

Inseparable

verb + particle + object.

Example:

Sarah go up the bedroom.

Turn

Into

Change from one thing into another.

Examples:

All the pigeons overhead starting to turn into vultures.

Most of our problems are turning into conflicts.

It takes many years for a tiny acorn to turn into a big oak tree.

The caterpillar turned into a beautiful butterfly.

Off

Make a machine(e.g a tv or computer) stop working temporarily.

Examples:

Turn off the computer when you've finished with it.

You always did forget to turn off the coffee.

Now, first you have to turn off the autopilot.

On

Over

Proceed to the next page of a book or magazine.

Examples:

If you turn over the page, you'll see a map of Egypt.

Look

Up

If you look up a fact or a piece of information, you find it out by looking in something such as a reference book or a list.

Examples:

* If you don't know the meaning of the word, look it up in a dictionary.

I´m going to look up some restaurants in that area.

Into

If a person or organization is looking into a possible course of action, a problem, or a situation, they are finding out about it and examining the facts relating to it.

Examples:

he detective was looking into the robbery.

We're looking into buying a new computer.

He looked into hiring another secretary, but it would have been too expensive.

When we looked into buying a car, we decided it was better to hire one occasionally.

Examples:

She was looking forward to the meal.

He was looking forward to working with the new Prime Minister.

They had looked forward to that holiday for months.

I'm really looking forward to my birthday!

After

To take care of; be responsible for

Examples:

She looked after the child while I was out

A babysitter usually looks after us on Friday evenings.

He doesn’t look after himself.

I love looking after the children.
