Ma hurt by "Old Nick"

Jack is confused and doesn't know what to think of the situation because hes not yet been introduced to violence yet but he has a feeling that its not good.

Airplane in Skylight

When Jack sees the airplane fly through he wonders what else is real out there. "Before i didn't even know to be mad we cant open door,my head was too small to have outside in it" there proves that the more knowledge he gets he thinks he knows everything.

Young & Naive

Since Jack is such a young age he can be fooled easily and often believes everything he hears

The skylight is a symbol that gives Ma hope because its a daily reminder that there is somewhere better outside room

Hope for Ma

Youth

Youth is symbolized all over room with all the things Ma and Jack make together

Able to express feelings

Whenever he has something on is mind he is very good at explaining to Ma how he feels

Empathetic

Jack is not only very good at expressing feelings himself hes also very good at listening to Ma and when shes upset or mad and thats how they always work out arguments.

"Everythings breakable" Jack is very mature because most boys his age dont know how to properly care for things

Jack also often washes the dishes for Ma which is a very grown up thing to do

Jack is a very brave boy and having to go through with Ma's escape plan just proves how brave he his willing to take those risks

Ma

Jack thinks Ma is lying about the real world but at the same time says "i don't want there to be bad stories and me not know them". So there is a small part of him that does believe Ma.

Ma sometimes pushes Jack too hard about the escape plan

"Old Nick"

Old nick is the man who had them held hostage in "room"

The "Outside"

He is very violent with Ma and its hard for Jack to see Ma hurt

"Outside"

Jack is not used to outside so when he finally gets outside his body reacts differently than others.

Jack and Ma show each other lots of love as the book goes on and even in the circumstance they were in they still be able to express love during those tough times

There is also a number of insects/ animals that come up in the book and every time Jack tries to make them his friend while Ma tries to kill them. This shows that Jack has a love for animals as well.

They are creative by coming up with the escape plan and they are also creative with the drawings and crafts they do

Jack is very imaginative with all the stories Ma tells him and always has so many questions to expand his thoughts
