Transition Process

r

Transition Process from my Kindergarten to Grade 1-5 school. Transition: I was transitioning from a school where I had met my very first best friends and with whom I had gotten very close to a school I had never heard of to learn French. How did you get through it? I got through it by focusing on the positive parts of the transition. Although I couldn't speak to my friends in person anymore, I could still go to their houses and call them on the phone which would be an interesting experience. I also was allowed to learn a new language which sounded exciting. I would know more than 3 languages, and a fourth one would be a good addition. I would be the only person in my family who knew French, I would be able to take my parents to France someday, I imagined the endless possibilities. I acknowledged that beyond my friends there was a world in which I wanted to do something big, and learning French would have been an interesting concept, especially for 6/7 year old me. What new skills did you learn? I learned how to make new friends, I made new friends at my old school (Naomi and Mia). I learned how to stay in touch in long distance friendships which helped me develop strategies to also get through COVID-19 as I mentioned previously in my assignments. I did not learn much from this transition if I am very honest, I was quite young and was not able to process many things, and feelings or recognize the difference in the schools.

Transition Process

r

Identify the TRANSITION process you went through from one event to the other. I transitioned from COVID-19 elementary school to middle school. In elementary school, they were easier on us because we did not have a ton of online experience and we were considered younger. In middle school, they were tougher on us as we were considered to be older and had more experience being online. (I know the two events are not back to back, in the middle there is Karate because I did not know how to put that in the middle of the 2020-2022 range. Please accept that.)How did you get through it? I got through the sudden rigour and expectations by connecting with the friends I had in my online class. We worked together on group projects and communicated with one another to figure out how some resources worked. We worked on assignments as a team and kept each other's spirits up throughout the whole online-school process. Some friends needed mental health support or support with the content. We were not being taught properly sometimes because we were online. We worked together to tutor each other, find helpful videos and lift each other's spirits up with digital cards. What new skills did you learn?I learned how to communicate with people over long distances and how to show appreciation for one another using online tools. (digital cards, specifically the Greetings Island app.) I learned how to be more responsible for my learning and how to learn without a teacher. I also developed self-studying skills when the teacher did not explain the lesson properly.

Transition Process

Also identify the TRANSITION process you went through from one event to the other I transitioned from the FI program to the AP program while also transitioning from middle school to high school. How did you get through it? I got through the transition by preparing myself for the AP program over the summer. I had prepared by buying a curriculum and studying from it so that I would be prepared. I lost contact with Naomi despite still being her friend even after I distanced a bit. I kept up the contact with my old friend by texting her regularly and visiting her house during my break. The transition was bumpy, I got homework the first day which I was not used to. I developed good study habits that day by finishing my work in class so that I did not have anything to do after school, I kept up this and was able to make a good transition. My friend Dhriti was at the new school so she helped me transition quite well because she made it feel as though I had never left kindergarten. I got through not having my classes in french by learning their English translations over the summer, and I connected with the other FI students in my classes. What new skills did you learn?I learned how to connect with people to benefit both them and me and later make them long lasting High School friendships. I learned how to adapt to new studying habits early on so that they keep with me, such as finishing my work in class (using class time effectively). I learned how to connect with my older friends on platforms besides calling and I learned how to maintain distanced friendships without breaking them over time. These skills are important to my academic career so that I am organized and on top of my work. They are also important (especially the social skills I developed) in workplaces where it is best to ask your peers for assistance instead of bothering your teacher (boss) every day. Adapting to new learning types is a skill that will help me if I ever decide to switch my major in university or if I ever choose to change my career pathway etc.

NOTE: I did not continue from High School because nothing major happend besides me having other friends and certain club/volunteering things but it was not a big event of my life that I thought was worth putting.
