Cognitive dissonance arises when there's a conflict between actions and beliefs, prompting a need for alignment. One way to address this is by altering behaviors to match beliefs, such as quitting smoking when aware of its dangers.

Trivialize the inconsistency

Trivialize the inconsistency problem completely.
Ex. Smoking regularly and don't care about it being bad.

Add new thoughts

Rationalize the inconsistency by adding new thoughts into the mix- thoughts.
Ex. Knowing that smoking is bad, still smoke regularly, but having a healthy life aside from that.

Change a behavior

Change the actions in order to be consistent between thoughts and behavior.
Ex. Knowing that smoking is bad so quit smoking.

Change a thought

In order to restore consistency, one thought most be changed.
Ex. Smoking regularly and thinking it is not that bad.
