Types of Workplace Harassment

There are so many types of workplace harassment and so many interpretations that even the most diligent HR professional could miss the signs

Discriminatory harassment

It is understood as any unwanted conduct related to racial or ethnic origin, religion or convictions, disability, age or sexual orientation of a person, whose objective or consequence is to attempt against their dignity and create an intimidating environment, humiliating or offensive

Desability-based harassment: Desability-based harassment is a type of workplace harassment directed towards individuals who either. -Suffer from a desability themselves -Are acquainted wiht a disabled person or people -Use disability sevices (sick, leave or workers'comp)

Sexual orientations-based harassment: -people of any sexual orientations (heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, asexual, etc) many experience this form of harassment depending on their line of work.

Age-based harassment: Workers 40 years and older are specifically protected by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in an attempt to promote employment of older people and reduce age-based harassment. -Teased and insulted -Left out of activities or meetings -Unfairly criticized.

Gender harassment: -A male nurse faces harassment for having what is perceived as a women's job. -A female banker hits glass ceiling and taunted for not being "leader material" -A male colleague displays material (comic, posters) that's degrading to women.

Religious harassment: Religious harasmnet is often interconnected with racial harassmen, but narrowss in specifically on the victim's religious beliefs. -Intolerance toward religious traditions -Intolerance toward religious customs -Cruel religious jokes -Degrading stereotypical comments

Racial harassment: A victim may experience racial harassment because of their race, skin color, ancestry, origin country or citizenship: - Racial slurs -Racial insults -Racial jokes -Degrading comments -Disgust -Intolerance or differences

Personal harassment

Personal harassment is a form o workplace harassment that's not based on one of the protected classes (such as race gender or religion). Personal harassment incluides: -Inapropiate comments -Offensive jokes -Personal humilliation -Critical remarks -Ostracizing behaviors -Intimidation tactics
