Revitalizing and repurposing abandoned or run-down spaces into green areas contributes significantly to sustainability by reducing the need for new construction. An example of this is the HiLine Park in New York City, which transformed an old railway track into a vibrant public park.

Repurpose/Renovate Run-Down/Abandoned Space into Green Space

Converting abandoned/rundown spaces and buildings into parkland or green space is sustainable because less "new" construction needs to happen. HiLine Park in New York City is a park constructed on an old railway track right along tenth avenue in the middle of one of the busiest stretches of Manhattan. It is an example of how old structures like railways, bridges, factories, warehouses, etc. are transformed into parks and open spaces for the public to use. It "lowers the blood pressure" as designer Ric Scofidio mentions in this video.
