Computers: How They Work

Motherboards

Motherboards

This is the computer's body,
it connects every part of the computer.

When making your own
pc or monitor its important to make sure your motherboard has enough space, and slots for everything you plan on adding. It needs to be able to run lots of RAM, and have a good power distributor.

CPU

CPU

CPU's are like the brain of the computer, They tell everything else what to do, and send out every command. They decode every command from the hard drive, to make the computer work.

CPUs need to have lots of cores and threads, to compute and work at it's best speed. This helps it work faster and aid you in whatever task you're doing.

RAM

RAM

RAM or the Random Access Memory holds things
that haven't been put in the hard drive. The RAM needs power to keep the information in it, meaning when you restart you computer, it empties. It's useful for 'surfing the web' and playing online games, rather then holding photos and files.

They need to have lots of GBs so they
don't need to be emptied frequently. If you have a small amount of RAM you're computer can get slow very fast.

Hard/Solid State Drive

Hard/Solid State Drive

This holds things too important for RAM. Like photos,
game progress and workfiles. But it's quite slow to retrieve things from the hard drive, so if you can, it's better to store it with RAM.

Even though solid state drives are bound to be slow,
the faster the better. It's also good if there's lots of space, so you don't have to worry about it getting full.

Power Supply Unit

Power Supply Unit

Power supply units are what converts the electricity from wall outlets or other sources, into power the computer can use, It also is what charges and supplies laptops with power during the day.

What's important with power supply units, are if it can do its job without overheating, or cool itself down without wasting lots of power in the process. It also should be able to work with the amount of power your machine needs.

Expansion Cards

Expansion Cards

There's many kinds of expansion cards you can get, and they all do different things. Depending on what your computer is for, you will have different ones. Like graphics cards, wireless cards and sometimes audio cards, to improve spacial audio.

It's good to get durable expansion cards,
with lots of bytes to do what they need.
