Elements, Compounds, Mixtures
Elements
All elements appear on the Periodic Table.
Atoms and molecules
Elements are made up of tiny particles called atoms
Atoms are the smallest particles of an element that have the chemical properties of that element.
They are different from that of another element
Molecules are a groups of two or more atoms that are chemically combined
Most elements are metall and are solids at room temperature except for mercury. They have a high melting and boiling point,
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into more simpler substances by chemical processes.
Non-metals can be solid, liquid or gas at room temperature.
Compounds
Combined directly to form compounds in fixed proportions
Substance that is made up of two or more elements chemically joined together
Can only be seperated by chemical reactions.
Made up of different elements chemically combined in fixed composition by mass
Mixtures
Two or more substances which are not joined together chemically
More than one element, more than one compound or elements and compounds together.
Do not have a fixed composition
Can be easily seperated into its components by physical methods
