Knowing if the Health Field Is the right path for you

Think about the about of time, commitment, and stress that goes into going through schooling and the career in general. Different ways to learn about this: Shadowing, classes, and volunteering.

Need to consider the drawbacks and what you have to sacrifice in order to go into the medical field

Start thinking about different contacts you can reach out to start to research and learn about what you want to go into

Becoming a competitive applicant

Understand pre reqs for the program you want to go into: Classes, Shadowing hours, Clinical hours, volunteering, etc.

Take amount the cost of applying to these schools, time commitment for application, what will put you ahead of others when it comes to applying

Learn about entry exams: How to study and prepare for that exam and how long it will take. Must programs have different compentices that the exam will test in

Talk to med students or actual doctors who know what the process is and can help give advice on what you should do next.

Do you need to take a gap year?

Is taken to address different things like timing, finances, and experience before starting health professional school

Think about how long you need to take a gap year for and how it will increase your chances of getting into the school of your choice.

What you should do during gap year? Finances, work, travel, clinical hours or volunteering. CBS career team gives a career fair that will give options/ opportunities to do during your gap year

Completing an Informational Interview

Inforamtion interview to ask aboiut pspectives from people have that careers that you are looking at.

Complete at least 2 to compare their experiences to understand differences and similarities that they have experienced in your career of choice. You can complete as many as you need until you think you have a good understanding of your career.

This information could come up in a interview to get into the school of choice and give more background about what is important.

Ask about their daily life and what it took to get there.

Writing a Personal Statement

A personal statement is a narrative that you write about yourself, your interest in the profession, how you know that it's right for you, and trying to tell admissions a story about yourself.

Helps admissions understand parts of your application like a bad GPA for example.

Best way to write a personal statement is to write a story about you and your program. There isn't one best way to start or write it, but you can have people edit and look over it.

Interview Process

For Med, Dental, and Pharm School the interview has changed greatly in the last couple of years. During covid, the interview process had to change greatly to acocomidate

Going to ask about competencies and how you addressed them through your education and volunteer experience.

Doing research on the different processes and talking to admissions is always the best way to get started.
