Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions
Definitions
Power Distance
The gap between the rich and poor. For example, Arab countries have a higher power distance because there is a greater gap between the rich and poor while Canada believes in equality so there is a much lower gap between the wealthy and poor. Due to Canada having a minimum wage policy, the population of the middle class is higher which Also Canada has a minimum wage policy so the middle class population is higher which is what decreases the gap between the wealthy and poor.
Masculinity vs Femininity
Masculinity vs femininity is like the difference between two people. One who is aiming for achievement, competition and success and one who is looking for quality of life and does not care about standing out from everyone. A higher score means there is a more masculine society(Everyone wants to the best in their field). A lower score means a more feminine society(Doing what you like, caring for others).
Orientation
Long term orientation focuses on the future of the of the country rather than focusing on the present and previous problems. This may include persistence, thrift and having a sense of shame, investment in real estate etc.
Individualism& Collectivism
Individualism is the view that everyone is for themselves. Society is not wholly selfless rather people tend stick by their immediate families but on the other hand collectivism is when people put their extended family or close friends before themselves. Canada has a higher score because it is more of an individualistic country like America and people who tend to grow up in Canada live a better life than their parents and everyone focuses on their own goals. However, since there aren't many locals in the UAE, the majority of the population is made up of expatriates living there so people tend to remain within their cultural and ethnic groups.
Uncertainty avoidance
Scoring low on the "Hofstede's uncertainty avoidance" indicates a a society's willingness to accept ambiguity. Canada has an open interpretation for society meaning it doesn't mind change thats why it has a score of 48. However, the UAE and Saudi Arabia have a score of 80, this means they adhere by their rules and are well organized.
