The civil war

there was a new president that had conflicting ideas from southern states.

The south was very agricultural based while the north was very industrial based

The war started at fort Sumter when the confederate troops open fired and forced the union to surrender the fort.

the battles really started in 1862

There were many devastating battles at this time such as Shiloh, Gains Mill, Fredricksberg, and Antietam.

The war lasted until 1864

By the end of the war in 1864 the North went into a strategy called total war and destroyed the old south to put an end to the war.

When the war ended slaves were now truly free. Of course there was an extent to that as well.

It took a long time to rebuild the south not only the structures but the trust of the people.
