Immigrants have historically moved to new countries for various reasons, seeking better life opportunities and escaping adverse conditions in their homelands. Irish immigrants, primarily driven by homelessness, poverty, and lack of crops, settled in places like New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Compare and contrast Then and Now immigrants

Brief summary

The reason why I chose these 5 presentations was because I was able to find many similarities and differences between the two groups, the way they organized their presentation helped me to find information easily. The type of questions they asked made it easier to compare and contrast.

Hungarians and Haitians by Tristan

Haitians imigrated in the 1960s, they decided to settle in Quebec, traveled to Canada with consent. While Hungarians Immigrated between 1800s and 1900s, they decided to settle in Manitoba and winnipeg, were refugees and peasants.
Similiraties
Hungarians and Haitians Immigrated to Canada for better and peaceful life. Both Hungarians and Haitians faced challenges along the way.

Irish and Indians by Noya

Indian people left because of overpopulation and Irish people left their country because of homelessness, poverty and no crops to sell. 1.5 to 2 million Irish immigrated to Canada. In 2015 there were 39,340 Indian people who registered in Canada. Now today in Canada there are about 1.4 million people living in Canada. Irish first came to settle in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Where as Indians decide to settle in Ontario and their actually 722,153 indians in Ontario itself

Indians and irish both immigrated to Canada because of job opportunities and better life. They both faced challenges but adjusting to a new culture is a challenge they both faced.

Russians and Pakistanis by Mariha

Time of Immigration is one of the difference since Russians started to immigrate in the late 1800s and most Pakistanis immigrated from 2011 to 2016, 41,480 immigrating to Canada. some push factors for pakistanis are Not enough jobs, political fear, desertification and pollution. As for Russians push factors were since world war 1 occured they wanted safety, shelter and escape from progroms.
Both Russians and Pakistanis have job opportunities as one of their pull factors. Toronto,Ontario and Saskatchewan are places where both Russians and Pakistanis decide to settle. They both faced challenges but a challenge that they both faced was racism

Syrians and Greeks by Malak

Their time of immigration is one of the difference since Greeks began immgrating in the1900s and syrians were welcomed in November 2015. Their method of transportation was different, Syrians had more support compared to Greeks and over 200000 Greeks compared to over 25000 Syrians.
Greeks and Syrians both Immigrated to Canada for a better life, both have war, conflicts and unsafe environment as reasons to leave their country. They both had language as a challenge and had little skills. Their time of immigration sure is different but they both are still welcomed today. They both would settle in urban areas for opportunities.

Jewish and Chinese by Zaid

Differences
By 1871, there were 1115 Jewish immigrants that have arrived to Canada. For the chinese Immigrants the population grew 63.5% from 2001 to 2011. It went from 332,825 to 545,535. Chinese left their country because of overpopulation and Jewish left their countrty because there was a prejudice that was growing against Jewish people in parts of europe. The chinese would have to pay a head tax from 1885 to 1923 but that no longer applies. Jewish occupations were shopkeepers, tailors and peddlers. As for Chinese many of them open restaurants and other than that the work occupied is same as other citizens in Canada.
Similarities
They both have faced challenges but a challenge that Jewish and Chinese both faced was employment. Both Chinese and Jewish would decide to settle in urbanized areas like Toronto, Ontario, Monreal and Vancouver. People started attacking and destroying shops of "Non-white". They both wanted to Immigrate to Canada because of a better life and job opportunities.
