How do we stay motivated when all our best efforts do not seem to pay off in the way we hoped?

The text explores themes of perseverance and resilience in the face of challenging circumstances. It reflects on staying motivated even when one's best efforts do not seem to yield the desired results.

How do we stay motivated when all our best efforts do not seem to pay off in the way we hoped?

The story about the Old Man is different from other stories because throughout half of the story in the beginning, the old man tried to fish for the pass 80+ day which is much longer than other stories in this unit. Like in the unit question where it explains that how we stay motivated even though we try out best as we hope. Just like the old man in the story for a while but is still motivated even since he was a young man.

She doesn't care about winning the race later on at the end of the race she cares about her brother being happy. This brings out the idea that even throught that she won she cares more of the out comes of what she did. The story is part of why do we still keep on of our motivation in the unit question is because in the story, it's mostly about the people around her that are the good or the bad keeps her motivate to make her win the race. This shows that people around us keeps us going.

This brings out new perspective of motivation and new ideas because we as us humans try our best. To workout of what we want to do because we love our passions of who we are as our identity.

These quotes helped me think of ‘How do we stay motivated when all our best efforts do not seem to pay off in the way we hoped?’ and led me to think an answer to it might be the failing experiences that we have gone through. That we can go through because we are able to look back at our past to know what we can change in the future and refix those mistakes that we have made. In the last quote, “Most obstacles ‘are not entirely under our control, and not entirely out of our control,’ ” explains that there are many obstacles that it looks like we can not succeed to do so but can’t stop going through the courses to finish those obstacles.

Yesterday I thought that the answer to a unit question was that people stay motivated by just trying not go give up and if things go wrong, stay focused on your goals and what you enjoy, but each of these quotes helped me think of the unit question differently because they helped me to deepen the answer I gave yesterday because they helped me realize that overwhelming odds and things that are out of our control may not always allow us to continue and stay focused. This helped me think of the unit questions by realizing another way to keep motivated is by reflecting on our mistakes. We are able to learn based on our mistakes so it is sometimes good when things don’t work out in our favor because we learn from it. It is sometimes painful to do this, but it is good to learn from so that we know what to do next. By doing this, we can try again and learn.

WAIT TO DO THIS UNTIL AFTER IT IS ASSIGNED. "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway

"The fish is my friend too," he said aloud. "I have never seen or heard of such a fish. But I must kill him. I am glad we do not have to try to kill the stars." pg.31
In the specific words gave me insight into Santiago's feelings is, "I am glad we do not have to try to kill the stars." brings out the feeling of determination. Like for example the star is like the motivation and goals that brightens the star in ourselves. To stay and keep going of what we love to do.

By looking how the old man talked about that certain quote about the stars, determination, and motivation. This makes me realized that how the quote highlights how the star is the light/lighter of our lives.

"Fish, softly, aloud, "I'll stay with you until I am dead." He'll stay with me too, I suppose, the old man thought and he waited for it to be light" pg.21
Here in specific words give me insight into the Santaigo's feelings is, "Fish, softly, aloud, "I'll stay with you until I am dead." brings out the feeling of deep connection of him and sea itself. For example he has been fishing for years as a living and now is a old man.

By looking how the old man talks to the fish that is part of the sea obliviously and said that he will be apart of the sea itself when he dies. Which makes me realized that talking to the fish makes him more conscious when he is alone fishing without the Boy.

"But, he thought, I keep him with precision. Only I have no luck any more. But who knows? Maybe today. Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky" pg.12
Here in specific words gave me insight into Santiago's feelings is, "I have no luck any more. But who knows? Maybe today. Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky" brings out the feeling of hope and will forever try to get of what we want to achieve that goal. For example during the pass eighty plus days, he was trying to catch a fish, but did not have any luck. But he is still keeps continuing his job.

By looking how the old man still continues to fish for a very long time and not retiring on what he loves makes me realized that how strong of a will that the old man has. This shows he never gives up at all in the whole story.

"Raymond's Run" by Toni Cade Bambara Look in 4.4 for what you wrote

“What grade you in now, Raymond?” “You got anything to say to my brother, you say it to me, Mary Louise Williams of Raggedy Town, Baltimore.” “What are you, his mother?” sasses Rosie. “That’s right, Fatso. And the next word out of anybody and I’ll be their mother too.” pg.4
In the specific words that gave me the insight into Squeaky's feelings is, "And the next word out of anybody and I’ll be their mother too.” shows that Squeaky is being bold, brash, and protective to her brother towards the bullies. That try to make fun of him because of his disabilities.

By looking how Squeaky cares deeply about her older brother from bullies about his disabilities. Makes me realized that she and her brother deep connection to each other. Squeaky discusses this connection that she cares about her brother so the reader understands how much she loves him.

“And I’m smiling to beat the band cause if I’ve lost this race, or if me and Gretchen tied, or even if I’ve won, I can always retire as a runner and begin a whole new career as a coach with Raymond as my champion.” pg.7
In specific words that gave me the insight into Squeaky's feelings is, "Raymond as my champion." kind of makes me think is she's happy and doesn't care about winner the race. Squeaks cares that her brother is happy and try to have closer relationship with him. Plus to stay to determined of what she loves in her character development through the story.

By looking how Squeaky doesn't care about winning the race to beat her brother's bullies but stays determined. Through her brother's positivity as a trophy in her eyes in the crowd. Makes me realized that even though we try as long as we enjoy of what we do. Like some of the goals that we have, can make up or determine how long it takes to finish in our eyes all of it.

Kitchenette building by Gwendolyn Brooks

"We think of lukewarm water, hope to get in it."
In the specific words gave me the insight into through the narrator's feelings is, "hope to get in it" I think the chief is still try have hope in their mind and heart that they do not want to lose of what they love.

By looking how the chief is trying to have hope in them. Shows how they try to find the positive/bright side of the job that they love. It makes me realized that by understand of how the chief gone through empathy.

"But could a dream send up through onion fumes its white and violet, fight with fried potato"
In the specific words that gives me the insight of the narrator's feelings is, "But could a dream send up through onion fumes". The chief is having an imagination of an onion and a potato fight kind of gives the insight of boredom in their mind. Even through that's the chief's dream job.

By looking how the chief is trying to keep their imagination from boredom of what they love to do. It makes me realized that if things are tough or boring we sometimes don't have other options and go through that moment of their life to stay determined.

Lessons from failure: Why we try, try again by Bethany Brookshire

"They found that activity was reduced in some parts of the brain when players were tackling challenges. For instances, the ventral striatum sits deep in the skull and is important in motivation such as whether to try again. Activity here dropped off when players brushed off a failure that had been within their control. The lower the activity in this brain region, the more likely a player was to give the game another go. Reduced activity in this area may not be pleasant, since it's associated with getting something wrong. But it also is associated with learning. As they change their behavior, participants might begin feel they can do better next time."
"Everyone experiences failures. But not everyone brushes themselves off and tries again. A new study shows that focusing on what can be learned from a failure appears to help people persevere with a better chance of success the next time."

I think which unit question seems interesting and important is, “How do we stay motivated when all our best efforts do not seem to pay off in the way we hoped?” is because even though we try to get off what we want by working hard but sometimes, even if we fail, we need to try again harder or try something new. Plus to understand the point of view of the reason why our effects didn’t seem to pay off of what we need to do or know more information about what the people want.
