My Social Structure

My Social Structure

Social Institutions

-Two social institutions in my life are WellSpan Health and RACC. -I work at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital and we obviously provide healthcare. I am a student at RACC so I can complete my education. -A combination of status inconsistency/role conflict I have with WellSpan as a social institution is that they do not mandate their employees to get the COVID vaccine, whereas a lot of other hospitals in the area do. I do not understand how you can be a powerful healthcare organization, but yet not have all of your caregivers vaccinated.

Groups

-I love working out, and I usually work out with a few buddies. We all share the gym as a common interest. -My close friends and I play in a fantasy football league together. It allows us to engage in football and communication even though we all live in different areas. -The most important group I am in is a relationship with my fiancé. She is my best friend and I am very lucky to have her by my side.

Roles

-A current role I have is a son to my father and mother. -Some future roles I will have are a husband to my lovely fiancé, a father to our future children, and a nurse. -An example of a role conflict for me is that my fiancé is currently makes a lot more money than me, because I am in school and she is working as a nurse; this is not an issue for me but historically the male is the "bread winner". -A role strain that I deal with is working in healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Social Class

-My family growing up was probably middle/upper middle class. We had a nice home and my sister and I had everything we really wanted. -My dad is a technical education teacher at a local vo-tech school. My mom is a medical coder. -Neither of my parents finished college, but they always pushed me to get an education.

Social Status

-Ascribed statuses for me are that I am a male, I am white, and I have brown hair and blue eyes. -Achieved statuses for me are that I am a surgical technician working in endoscopy, and that I am a nursing student. -I don't necessarily feel like I have had any status inconsistencies. One might be that I am a male going into the field of nursing, which historically has been dominated by females. -A master status for me would be that I work in healthcare. I really do enjoy and take pride in taking care of patients and I feel that reflects in my personality.

Culture

-I am always listening to music; I listen to just about everything. My favorite genre is 60s/70s classic rock, but my favorite band is Nirvana because they were the first band that I really felt connected to. -I am a huge Philadelphia sports fan. My fiancé has to deal with my mood swings depending if the Eagles win or lose on Sunday. This is something that my dad passed down to me, as we always watched sports together. -I am not a very religious or spiritual person, but something that I try to follow is to just be kind to people.
