Edgar Collins and the new Cezanne

personal information

dropped out of graduate school in 1988

amasses billions from Indochiniese & Chinese telecom venture

wealthy collector of fine art & interested in finding undiscovered work

in 1992 he discovered a new van Gogh that belonged to a japanese family for 50 years

he decided to donate art work to public musems all over the world

he donated a new Paul Cezanne to the city's metropolitan museum

it was known that there aren't any undiscovered Cazenne

an investigation carried by spectrotech and university professors to examine the painting

examinaton & results

Dr. Marden

dated the painting to the late 1880's

declares the painting orginalty by using low magnification under microscope which showed that the structure of brushwork is the same as of other paintings

similar to Cezanne at the Barnes foundation in Merion with many similar visual elements but different arrangement and composition

painting is not signed but that isn't unusual & its about 55 by 125 centimeters

Dr. Pruschy

examined a paint chip by using ultraviolet (UV) spectum of incident light

this showed the absorption of polyene that oxidizes over time reaching 0.6

this suggests the painting to be approximatly 100 years old

to control for possible contamination other samples were taken & they all gave the same results

Dr. Anderson & Dr.Philip Marden

used infrared (IR) spectroscopy to detect anomlies beneath the paint

yellow areas indicated the possibility of cadmium yellow lithosone, mix that was used 20 years after Cazenne's death

another technique will be used to detect metal nuclie in its composition elements

IR refractography indicated an underdrawing by charcoal

the binder used is an animal glue binder

all this indicates that the painting may not be Cezaenne

Dr. Montoya

examined the composition elements of blue, yellow & green taken from different colored areas by x-ray fluorescence

the excitation then de-excitation of the inner electrons showed that the composition of painting is as that of pigments used during Cazenne's life

this made the painting original from an x-ray spectroscopist's point of view

Dr. Simpkins

examined fluorescence from image's surface using short & long UV wave excitation from mercury lamps

color of trees & roof top showed same technique found in Gardanne "Cezanne's painting"

no evidence of polyene were found

regions examined by both techniques might have aged differently

part might be exposed to light

another compound quenching polyene to lower signal in back ground
