How to develop listening skill in English I students

Institution

The University of Quintana Roo (UQROO) is the largest public university in the state of Quintana Roo, located in the city of Chetumal; As well as academic units on the island of Cozumel and Playa del Carmen and coming soon Cancun. It offers 16 bachelor's degrees at the academic unit of Chetumal, 5 at the academic unit of Cozumel, 3 at the academic unit of Playa del Carmen and 3 at academic unit of Cancun.

Infrastructure

The infrastructure of the University of Quintana Roo (UQROO) incorporates technological advances in substantive areas such as telecommunications networks, intelligent buildings, laboratories and workshops equipped with advanced technology, semi-Olympic sports facilities, among others.

It has a huge library which you can find many English books to comprehend better some topics. The library system is composed by two modern libraries, available to students, teachers and researchers from the region. Also, it has an updated bibliography and services whose quality has been certified by international organizations.

Studentes

In the University of Quintana Roo there are two groups of English one in two respective morning and afternoon shifts. The number of students includes 62 of which 31 are in the morning and afternoon 31 but we focused on the afternoon group for this project. The English one students are in the second semester of the major and they are between 19 and 21 ages and the majority of them have the Basic English level. We want to help them to develop their listening skills with the use of the technology and also using the instructional method and media.

Professors

In the University of Quintana Roo there are around 52 English teachers. Approximately 30 teachers are from CEI and 22 are from the English language major. The majority of teachers from English language major are full-time. The course of English 1 is given by two teachers. It is important to know that is a huge advantage because there are enough teachers to teach properly English
Teacher Lira from the afternoon is the responsible to give classes to 31 students from this level.

University Language Teaching Centre (CEI)

The Uqroo also has a center of English (SAC) with equipmente, books and internet access. The center of English has speaking corners for each English level ans this courses are for all the students in order to develop their english skills. Usually English language students of eighth semester are required to impart these speaking corners at the SAC. According to their English level, they must be able to give their first classes now in order to practice the way they are going to teach. Most of the time, they use instructional methods such as presentations, games, drill and practice, during their speaking corners that last one hour.

Introduction

We chose the University of Quintana Roo because as students of English Language Major we want to improve listening skill with the use of the ICT and instructional methods for our colleagues in English I. We think that starting for the first level of English is the best option to improve it due to the students is acquiring the English knowledge.

Aproach of the major

The main aim of this major is to encourage students to build strong bases for learning a second language that in this case is English. Nowadays, English opens lots of doors in a business world; moreover, you can apply it for educational purposes. That is why a person who speaks English has better opportunities to get better jobs and also a better quality of life. Thus, it is necessary to form capable future teachers who can share and teach their English knowledge to their pupils.

Eglish I

In this first course of English students will have their first contact with grammar structures well as minimum vocabulary through the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Students will develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing at this level using basic aspects of the language. They can truly communicate in simple situations in real life, both in the classroom and outside it. They also learn to ask for and give information, to choose the appropriate vocabulary for different situations, and to express their ideas and feelings.
