El cactus en flor- (Anchor chart of a blooming cactus) Students add a flower to document each time Petra Luna learns a new strategy for overcoming adversity
Mi diario- Students personalize a journal and keep entries after each day's reading. What problems did Petra face? What strategies does she use to overcome adversity? How do you relate to Petra's journey? (Additional guided reflection prompts to be provided).
Story Sharing: Students re-read Chapter 10 (English text) and discuss Barefoot dreams: "I was scared but I had to be brave." Students will interview a classmate about adversity they have faced or what barefoot dream do you have? What barriers are you facing? What tools or strategies do you have to overcome this adversity?
Mindful Muñeco Graphic Organizer
Art as Resistance- Petra's name means rock and she carries a special rock with her during her journey. Students will use rock painting to create a rock garden of affirming messages that they would want to see at the border if they were Petra. (Rock gardens can be installed at the entrance of their classroom/school).
Students will write a bilingual school announcement to introduce their rock garden and explain its significance
Argumentative essay- Barefoot Dreams Students will write a letter to a classmate to encouraging them to achieve their barefoot dream that they shared earlier in this unit. Using argumentative writing to structure your letter.
