When a person or organisation have something to gain from promoting and defending that interest
If a vested interest is identified, this may reduce the creidibility
- To be truthful or to lie
- To interpret a situation or a piece of evidence in a particular way
- To withhold certain information and release certain information

For example a good reputation is vital for those who are lawyers, doctors. Their livelihood depends on that

Important to assess eevidence in terms of the vested interests of those who produce it

Vested interest in hiding the hamful effects on health of smoking
Corporate Crime
Crimes commited by large business organizations provide an obvios example of a vested interest to lie
They can result in public disgrace, end careers, bankuptcy and a jail sentence
Government Spin
Attemp to justify their actions. It present information in such a way that it creates a favorable impression on their policies, decision and actions
"Spin" is a term sometimes use to discribe the ways in which governments select information. (Selecting info that support government policies)
