Compounds

Covalent Compounds

Properties

Cannot conduct electricity in any form

Soluble in organic solvent but insoluble in water.

Low melting and boiling point.

Usually are gases or liquid at room temperature.

Volatile

Covalent molecules have low melting and boiling point because of weak intermolecular forces. Therefore little heat is neede to overcome these forces.

Ionic Compounds

Properties

Non-volatile

Can conduct electricity in molten and aqueous state but not in solid state.

Souluble in water but not in organic solvent

High melting and boiling point
