It is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
Cuba is only 90 miles south from the coast of Florida.
As a communist country
All Cuban businesses belonged to the government.
Anyone who disagreed with the government´s policies was put in jail.
Fidel Castro has been Cuba´s only communist president since 1959.
Cuba and the Soviet Union
Cuba became an ally of the Sovet Union.
The Soviets sent supplies because they wanted to spread communism around the world.
This relationship started the Cold War between Cuba and the U.S..
The Exiles
Cubans left their country and family behind.
Many were tired of the limits on freedom and lack of opportunity.
Some formed in Miami the Cuban neighborhood called Little Havana.
Before Communism
Cuba was one of the richest countries in the Caribbean.
Sugar planters and hotel owners made a lot of money but farm and factory workers earned low wages.
Rebel groups wanted to remove the corrupt dictators.

Fidel Castro has allowed people to travel and private ownership of some businesses in Cuba.
Cuban exiles hope for better relationships between Cuba and the U.S.
Cuban people want to be able to return in freedom.
