Hemodialysis (HD) is an extracorporeal blood purification technique that partially supplies the renal functions of excreting water and solutes, and regulating the acid-base and electrolyte balance. It does not supply endocrine or renal metabolic functions. It consists of interposing between 2 liquid compartments (blood and dialysis fluid) a semi-permeable membrane. For this, a filter or dialyzer is used

Types of dialysis

PERITONEAL

Peritoneal dialysis is carried out thanks to the exchange of solutes and water between the blood and the peritoneal dialysis fluid through the peritoneal membrane.

HEMODIALYSIS

Hemodialysis is a renal function replacement therapy that consists of the diversion of the patient's blood towards a semi-permeable membrane, so that through the mechanisms of diffusion, convection and ultrafiltration, the elimination of solutes that are accumulated in the bloodstream and that are the cause of the clinical manifestations of uremic syndrome, to be returned to the patient again.

Types of catheter used

Peritoneal catheter

Arteriovenous fistulas

Central venous catheter
