Important Examples of Nature in the Indian Horse.

Gods Lake

Family land

r

God's Lake was an escape for the family once Benjamin returned from the residential school with Tuberculosis. The lake promised a lot of safety to the Indian Horse family. Once the family arrived at the lake it provided exactly what the family needed.

No one could live on God's Lake except for the Indian Horse family. "No one could stay there; whenever anybody tried, a powerful presence would overwhelm them and they would run away".(pg.20)

"There were game and fish and berries and we ate like we never had before".(21)

Naomi

Sual's Grandmother

Naomi made sure to never stop teaching Sual about his family's past.

She taught Sual to hunt and gather food for his family when his parents were drinking a lot.

She protects Sual from the white men who are trying to take him to residential schools.

"Indian Horse"

Indian Horse is Sual's family name, gained from his great-grandfather Shabogeesick.

r

The Ojibway people had never seen a horse before, they were scared at first and didn't know what to think about Shabogeesick bringing one to their land. Although it turned out to bring great teachings and become very helpful to the people and their everyday tasks. This is why the people decided to then give Shabogeesick the last name Indian Horse.

Shabogeesick was the first to bring a horse back to Manitoba from the north.

"The Oijbway were not people of the horse"(pg.5)

"it comes bearing great teachings"(pg.7)

Sual's Emotions

Sual used nature to relax himself when he was feeling overwhelmed.

When trying to remember his culture and teachings, he would go outside to think and listen to the wind, and the water.
