SEPARATION OF MIXTURE 9B
Decantation
Definition
is a process for the separation of mixtures of immiscible liquids or of a liquid and a solid mixture such as a suspension.
Steps
Put a stirring stick on the mouse of the container to avoid trickling of the liquid to the outside of the container.
Tilt the container and slowly decant the supernatant.
Pour suitable washing solvent to the precipitate and transfer the solvent by decantation
Crystallisation
Definition
The formation of crystals or the assumption of a crystalline form.
Steps
The solution is heated in an open container.
The solvent molecules start evaporating, leaving behind the solutes.
When the solution cools, crystals of solute start accumulating on the surface of the solution.
Crystals are collected and dried as per the product requirement
Fractional distillation
Definition
separation of a liquid mixture into fractions differing in boiling point (and hence chemical composition) by means of distillation, typically using a fractionating column
Steps
You heat the mixture of two or more substances (liquids) with different boiling points to a high temperature. ...
The mixture boils, forming vapor (gases); most substances go into the vapor phase.
Chromatography
Definition
a technique for the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates
Steps
A horizontal line is drawn near one end (about 1.5 cm from the bottom edge) of the paper. ...
The sample needs to be separated is placed as a small drop or line on to the paper using capillary tube. ...
The paper is then placed into a sealed container with a swallow layer of suitable solvent
Filtration
Definition
the action or process of filtering something
Steps
Flute filter paper if necessary
Place filter paper in the funnel. ...
Wet the filter paper using a small amount of the liquid that is the solvent of the mixture being filtered.
After the filtrate has been collected, pass a small amount of the wash liquid through the filter paper to wash the residue.
Simple Distillation
Definition
Distillation is the process of separating the components or substances from a liquid mixture by using selective boiling and condensation.
Steps
Check the calibration of the thermometer that is to be used. ...
Fill the distillation flask. ...
Heat the distillation flask slowly until the liquid begins to boil (see Figure 4). ...
As the distillate begins to drop from the condenser, the temperature observed on the thermometer should be changing steadily
