History of Earth Project
How do we determine the age of the Earth?
Resources- history of Earth notes
Claim- accretion, crust, mantle, core
evidence- Relative dating- determining the age of an object by comparing its age to another object
evidence- Example- rocks in different layers in the crust
evidence- Absolute dating- determining the actual age of an object
evidence- Example- using radioactive decay to determine the actual age of a rock
connection- if i wanted to determine the exact age difference between my sister and i, then i would use a calculator to figure the exact difference just like absolute dating
Why does the surface of the Earth look like it does today?
resources- history of earth notes
claim- continental drift, plate tectonics, plate boundaries, convection
evidence- Continental drift- continents once formed as a single landmass and have broken apart to present day locations
evidence- Convection- heat transfer by the movement of heated fluid
evidence- divergent boundaries- move away from each other
evidence- Convergent boundaries- move towards each other
evidence- Transvergent boundaries- slide past each other up and down
connection- my friends were in a relationship as a whole landmass lol and then they broke up like what continental drift is. Where they split apart and it stays that way
What changes do rocks go through?
resources- history of earth notes
claim- rock cycle, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks, compaction, cementation, and fossils
evidence- Igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic can change into another type of rock
evidence- Compaction- the weight of overlying sediments cause pressure and push the sediments together
evidence- Cementation- minerals get left between sediments and provide a cement to hold the sediments together
evidence- Rock cycle- magma is the parent material for all rock, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock
connection- when i wake up in the morning, i go through a continuous cycle of changing outfits
