Total Institutions
total institutions-Places where people are completely cut off from the outside world and have strict rules on how they must behave.
Refers to places like the military, prisons, boarding schools, or psychiatric institutions.
Erving Goffman was the first person to coin the term

in a total institution residents undergo Re-socialization which is where their environment is carefully controlled to encourage them to adopt a new set of norms, values, or beliefs.
use rewards and punishments to break down existing personality and build a whole new personality.
Peers
Children are exposed to pier groups at school
Peer groups are social groups whose members have interests, social position, and usually age in common.
Coleman did study in 1950s that discovered main social groups that people in school identified with. they were nerds, jocks, burnouts, leading crowd.
with Coleman's study came Social Prescriptions - Behaviors that were expected of people in those groups
We don't just pick peer groups based on how we are, peer groups help mold us into who we are.
Mass Media
Media you consume are parts of socialization
There are connections between excessive television viewing in early childhood and cognitive, language and social emotional delays.
Media can influence attitude of the consumer
mass media - means of delivering impersonal information to a vast audience.
introduce people to ideas that reflect society as a whole more.
