Initial reaction to poem: I felt pity for the author, the way he wrote this poem shows how much he longed for his homeland that he lost.

Tone of the poem: it sounds kind of sad or sorrowful, the way he talked about how he could have been happier dead than having to lose his homeland, showing how unhappy it made him. He also mentions how his dreams for his home were lost. So in general, it isn’t a very happy poem.
