IBL- Discovering Objects

Essential quetions

about aboriginal people of Canada?

What do you know about the living conditions of aboriginal people of Canada?

Teacher will start writing the key words used by the students on the board while answering the questions. Students may use words like Aboriginal, Heritage etc. in their answer. Then teacher will underline the key words from the vocabulary list and will explain about them in context with Canadian civilisation.

Purpose of Museums

What is the purpose of organising heritage fairs or developing museum?

What are the possible objects, we can see in our museum related to Canadian history?

Then teacher will explain about artifacts by giving few examples linked with the objects displayed in various museums.

Student engagement

Then teacher will show the video on aboriginal artifacts (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-9ngOmJQfw) without giving them the clue about the content.

After the completion of the video, sticky notes will be distributed in the class by splitting them in group in pair. Then teacher will ask them to make a list of the items which they observed in the video and they will be asked to exemplify the use of these objects in their daily lives of people in early Canada.

Cooperative Interaction

At this stage teacher will provide the artifact information package to each student and will explain about the information given in the package related to artifacts. Every group will be asked to select two artifacts for the further research and teacher will keep the record of each group’s research object and will make sure that all 18 artifacts gets chosen by the groups.
Students will be asked to research for the answers to the questions mentioned on activity sheet (Discovering Object activity sheet) provided by teacher.
Students will be given time in groups to discuss about the responsibility of the task they are sharing for research work.

Resources will be provided for the research about artifacts.

Day 2

Cooperative Interaction

What resources you explored for your research?

What extra information you collected about the artifacts made by aboriginals?

Name at least two artifacts related to the cloths, eating habits, hunting etc.

Performance Evaluation

Every group will present their findings on the artifact answering all the questions asked in the activity sheet provided to them.

During presentations, teacher will observe work of each group and will sum up each presentation by sharing additional information on each artifact. While observing focus will be on their findings, presentation and additional interesting facts about the artifact.

Reflect

Students will be asked to compare the People of Canada of the Past to People of Canada Today in the same groups. They will be asked to develop one chart depicting the differences and to display their work on the Social Study wall in the classroom.

Students will be given time in the groups to discuss about their findings about artifacts.
