I Felt A Funeral In my Brain by Emily Dickinson
I felt a Funeral, in my Brain,
And Mourners to and fro
Kept treading - treading - till it seemed
That Sense was breaking through -
And when they all were seated,
A Service, like a Drum -
Kept beating - beating - till I thought
My mind was going numb -
Funeral service, the funeral starting
Funeral, the wake, mourning the individual who died
The poem starts out with the writer's comparing their state of mind being like a funeral.
The poem uses a lot of metaphors and symbols. Some symbols include:
The Mourners symbolizing sadness and death.
The stanzas are broken up into different stages of a funeral. Stanza One is the Wake, the second stanza is the funeral service, the third stanza is the funeral procession and then finally burial.
And then I heard them lift a Box
And creak across my Soul
With those same Boots of Lead, again,
Then Space - began to toll,
The coffin being closed, the person being carried to their grave
