Gallon Man activity in 3rd grade:
Math Activity
Cognitive Hooks
Senses Assocated with the memory
Sight
Smell
The smell of pumpkin because we were doing our halloween party after.
Taste
I remember boys putting glue in their mouth and every time I use white craft glue, I think of those boys eating the glue and I can taste what the glue would taste like.
My sight started going bad when I was in third around the time we did the gallon man activity.
Reading King Gallon Man
Singing "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" but with Gallons, Quarts, Pints, & Cups
We then cut up pieces of paper and used glue to put together the gallon man
Girls learning: able to do an individual activity, social interaction with the teacher as she was demonstrating how to do the activity
Boys learning: hands on activity, able to stand up and move around to get paper, glue, scissors, etc.
Recontruction errors
Singing the tune to "head, shoulders, knees, and tones" and my friend saying that the measurement song actually goes to "dry bones"
Also learned about measurements in fourth grade, so the gallon man could have been done in fourth grade instead of third grade
Friend had multiple cancer treatments until the end of elementary school so perhaps he came back in 4-6th grade when we doing an art activity instead of 3rd grade
Non-Declarative Memory
Procedural Memory:
Practice with the skills that have been learned so they become efficient.
With continuing practice I now know how many cups are in a gallon, how many cups are in pint, etc. without having to resite the gallon man
When I think of when I first starting learning these skills, I think of when I did the art activity and the story/song associated with it.
Knowing the facts about measurements have become so natural that I feel like I have always known how to do it.
Other memories Associated
with Gallon Man
The first day my best friend came back to class after cancer treatments
