Mixtures & Pure Substances
Matter
Mixtures
Mixtures is the result of combining different substances or types of particles.
Pure substances
Elements
Elements consist of only one type of atom
Copper is an example of an element. It is only made up from copper atoms. (Solid)
Bromine is an example of an element. It is only made from one type of atom. (Liquid)
Compounds
Made up of different types of atoms that are chemically mixed.
An example of a compound is water. It is made up of hydrogen and oxygen. (Liquid)
Table salt is also a compound. It is made up of sodium and chloride. (Solid)
Air is also a compound. It is made from oxygen, nitrogen, and some argon. (Gas)
Liquids are a form of matter. They take the shape of a container when poured, and they are not rigid. A liquid has particles that are close together, but can still slide against eachother.
Solids are another form of matter. They have a rigid shape. A solid's particles are tightly packed together and have energy.
Gasses are the third and final type of matter. They have particles that are very far apart from each other.
All matter has weight and mass.
