Hawaii is volcanic island. It's the only U.S State outside North America, the only state that is an archipelago and the only state geographically located within the tropics.

History

The archipelago had been inhabited by Polynesian people for several centuries when the british explorer James Cook arrived in 1778, who named it "the Sandwish island". It was succeeded by an ephemeral republic of Hawaii ( 1894-1898 ) and the territory of Hawaii, created during the annexation of the archipelago by the US. in december 1941, the island of Oahu was the scene of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The territory was dissolved in 1959 when Hawaii became the 50th American States.
