The Enlightenment

During the Enlightenment, several philosophers introduced ideas that significantly influenced political thought and societal structures. Thomas Hobbes posited that humans are inherently selfish and that life without governance would be chaotic and harsh.

Baron de Montesquieu

He thought that authority should be divided, and that each branch of government should serve as a check on the other branches.
Baron de Montesquieu believed people were not equal, he supported slavery, and thought woman could not do what men could do.

John Locke

He believed that people had the right to life, liberty, and property.He thought the best type of government had limited power and was accepted by all citizens. Locke rejected the ideas of absolute monarchy, and believed that if government attempted to deny people their natural rights; then the people had the right to replace the government.
John Locke thought that people were basically reasonable and moral.

French Revolution

Napoloen Bonaparte was in the French army and leader of the coup that overthrew the Directory. Jacque- Pierre Brissot was a member of the Legislative Assembly and the National Convention. Charles de Calonne was the controller of fiance appionted by King Louis XVI after Jacques Necker was forced out of office in 1781.

He thought in an ideal society people would make the laws and would obey them willingly.
Jean- Jacques Rousseau believed people were basically good but were corrupted by society.
