Early Numeracy & Counting

Verbal Counting

Oral repetition combined with some manipulation of objects

Counting slowly and effectively

Teaching skip counting through song (2, 4, 6, 8....)

Manipulatives and hundreds charts are useful for kinesthetic learners

Give a # and start counting from there to another number (practice)

Number writing rhymes to associate counting with symbols

Operational Sense

Using subtraction in a "counting up" process and "taking away process"

Recognizing mathematical concepts in everyday life.

Manipulatives such as number lines and dot cards to understand the basics of adding and subtracting

Making estimations and predictions

Recognizing/Manipulating Quantities

Activities with WHOLE/PART relationships using manipulatives

Counting ON vs. Counting ALL

Using landmark numbers such as 5,10,20 to count quantities in steps

Representation

Creating their own methods for working through addition and subtraction

Have students understand the difference between the forms of representation of numbers (standard, expanded, written)

Examples include 'number show and tell', building numbers with digit cards, using place value charts, place value + charts for expanded form & pictoral representations (1 cube vs. 10 cube rod).
