How Social Change Theories

Cultural Materialism

Supports social change due to new products being created. Causes each generation to grow up with a different type of appreciation for cultural materialism.

Structural Functionalist

Intersectionality

This supports social change because it not only relates to conflict but feminism and also humanism. If there are people who feel discriminated in multiple ways, then it can be said that those people would also want change. Thus presenting an antithesis.

Feminism

Encourages change because women who are feeling oppressed will express that and will create campaigns (Me too movement, me to we, etc.). This also ties in with conflict as there is a certain group of people who present an antithesis to a thesis.

Conflict

Conflict encourages change because it is needed to satisfy the combination of the thesis and antithesis. Also, is a recurring cycle, therefore no evidence of resisting change.

Cognitive

Supports social change because everybody who observes somebody doing something won't copy them, but translate that observation into something that will be applicable in their lives respectively. In addition, not every person is the same, and types of cognitive observations and what the task being observed is different from generation to generation.

Humanism

This depends on who this theory relates to as it utilizes the person's experiences.

Resists social change by contributing to an increase in stability within a community
