Teachers’ values and beliefs affect unconsciously their attitude in how they see their students and what expects of them.

Culture and society had taught us to unconsciously categorize or stereotype individuals.

Jennifer Eberhardt has been conducted implicit bias research experiments with different population with the same results. People judge and profile others based on race and inequality (Tackling Implicit Bias, 2017).

measure unconscious bias conducted by the Harvard University.

Countering Stereotype Threat

Teachers’ attitudes affect
how student does in school.

There is a stereotype that black an Latino are less intelligent than white and Asian students.

Low income students are low performance students.

Any stereotypes such for ethnicity, gender or age can affect negatively the individuals.

Address Negative Stereotypes in the Moment

*teach the students to learn and accept others cultures with their values and beliefs.

Have Conversations About Negative Stereotypes

*Be open to start discussions (One example that I always use
is when a young child talk about that boys are not supposed to wear the color pink or purple).

Use Events and Activities to reduce the Power of Stereotypes

*Teach students to not make assumptions about others for their appearances.

Identify Safe Classrooms and Schools

A safe classroom is a classroom where students feel safe, they can express their toughs, ideas. Also, students will be confident to take risks accepting the challenges of the teacher to try new things.

Child-centered teaching

*Students have to feel safe to express their emotions, thoughts and ideas.
* Work in cooperative small groups
*They may have opportunities to solve problems on their own
*Student have to have different choices so they can feel that they can make their own decisions.

Cultivating Diversity as a Resource

*consequences and expectations are non-negotiable
*Meaningful and purposeful learning activities will be based on the student interest and their culture.
Their Culture will be an essential part of the curriculum

Classroom Relationships

*support and encourage positive interactions with the teacher and with other students.
* model kindness, accept that sometimes you don't know things, be a mediator when problems arise and give them opportunity to think about possible solutions.

Caring Classroom Environments

*Teacher have to build an atmosphere of trust.
*Teachers have to establish clear and acceptable behavior.
*arrangements of the physical environment must be facilitate the movement of the teacher and the students during the day and the different activities.

Prejudice is an opinion, prejudgment or attitude about a person or group.

Discrimination is a behavior that treats people unequally because of their group.

Implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions,behaviors, and decision in an unconscious manner.
