Literary Reading Group
This group refers to practising participatory reading of a literary book throughout the whole academic year with the aim of discovering and exploring different aspects of the book without the restriction of a narrow thematic or other context and to exchange reading experiences from meeting to meeting. The slow pace of participatory reading and the absence of a specific perspective in the approach allows us to observe how our reading evolves and to reflect both on the stimuli and issues raised by the text and on our own personal relationship with reading.

Group of Interdisciplinary Dialogue Urban Cantadoras
The theme of the group's readings and discussions is "Multimodal and interdisciplinary readings of gender and racial discrimination". The name of the group is inspired by the improvised traditional songs of Afro-Colombian women on farms who narrate memories and express the power of the female voice through song. The group aims to raise awareness on issues of gender and racial discrimination through interdisciplinary and multimodal negotiations of meanings of literary or academic works and films, with the ultimate goal of empowering women's identity, opening up spaces and developing ways to participate in public discourse and intervention.

Research Group for the Study of the Linguistic Landscape of Volos
The research group consists of undergraduate students of the Department and was created during the winter semester of the academic year 2021-2022 under the coordination of Roula Kitsiou. The research question that was set for investigation in the year 2021-2022 based on the interests of the participating students is: How is childhood constructed in the linguistic landscape of Volos? For this purpose, the group members observe and record the surrounding written space (e.g. playgrounds, parks, buildings, shops, posters, graffiti, signs, prompts, suggestions, prohibitions), talk to citizens of Volos and reflect dialogically on (multi)lingual elements of the linguistic landscape that address children directly and explicitly or indirectly and in a multimodal way. They discover ways in which gendered identities are constructed in the linguistic landscape, visibilize ways in which public space includes and excludes social groups, and present ideas for re-imagining a more inclusive public space for children and adults.

The Act4Lang Group: Acting for Languages
The group was created from the active interest of undergraduate students in collective actions on issues of language contact, translanguaging and communication in multicultural environments as well as from the need to connect theoretical knowledge with social practice and research. During the academic year 2022-2023, the team members participated in the design of multimodal educational resources for language and intercultural awareness and critical literacy, their implementation within classes of Erasmus students learning Greek, conducting research interventions and the implementation of a walking tour and creative activities in the city of Volos with the Erasmus students, aiming at developing multilingual and intercultural awareness, critically exploring the contact of languages and developing translingual and creative practices. Through the group's actions, its members discuss, critically reflect, investigate and co-create on issues of translanguaging and intercultural exchange in education and society.

Objectives and expected learning outcomes
The current Programme of Study of DLIS aims at the development of specific and general competencies so that its graduates can develop a distinct scientific and professional identity as experts in applied language studies, intercultural studies and intercultural/comparative literary studies.

Elena Anastasaki has studied French Literature at the University of Athens and holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from the Universities of Kent and Paris 8 (co-tutelle). She has taught at the University of Kent, Panteion University, the Athens School of Fine Arts, the Hellenic Open University and the University of Tübingen, where she was also a Marie Curie Fellow (2013-2015). Since March 2021 she is Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature at the Department of Language and Intercultural Studies at the University of Thessaly; and since June 2022, Directrice de Programme at the Collège International de Philosophie (CIPh, Paris). Her research interests lie in the comparative study of European and American Literature from the 19th century to the present with emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches to literature, identity and intercultural studies, the relation of literature and philosophy, dystopian literature, science fiction, hybrid genres, wordplay and metaliterature.

Ioannis Galantomos is an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Department of Language and Intercultural Studies at the University of Thessaly. He holds a BA in Medieval & Modern Greek Literature and an MA in Linguistics, both degrees obtained at the University of Ioannina. He earned a Doctorate degree in Applied Linguistics at the University of Thessaly in 2009. Dr. Galantomos joined the faculty at the University of the Aegean in 2013 as a Lecturer. He has taught with the Universities of Thessaly, the University of the Aegean, the Democritus University of Thrace and the European University of Cyprus. Dr. Galantomos’ research focuses on Applied (Cognitive) Linguistics, Teaching Modern Greek as an L1-FL/L2, FL/L2 Vocabulary instruction, Bi-/Multilingualism and Bilingual Special Education.

Nikolaos Gogonas is an Assistant Professor in Intercultural Communication and Globality at the Department of Language and Intercultural Studies of the University of Thessaly. He holds a DPhil from Sussex University and he has extended teaching experience in tertiary education (University of Thessaly, Université du Luxembourg, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens). His research interests include Intercultural communication, intercultural education, multilingualism in contexts of migration, superdiversity and globality. His publications include edited volumes, book chapters and articles in international journals such as Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, Multilingua, International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, International Migration. He is an editorial board member at the Journal of Multilingual Theories and Practices (Equinox).

Roula Kitsiou is an Assistant Professor of Sociolinguistics at the Department of Language & Intercultural Studies of the University of Thessaly. She has graduated from the Department of Greek Philology of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and she holds a MA degree in “Modern Learning Environments and creation of educational materials” of the Department of Primary Education (University of Thessaly). Her postdoctoral research with an IKY grant that was realized at the University of the Aegean was relevant to Arabic-speaking unaccompanied minors’ literacies. She has more than 10 years of experience on issues of language education, social and educational inclusion of migrants and refuges. Her research interests include linguistic landscape studies, linguistic ethnography, critical discourse analysis, critical literacy, issues of language policy and identities, linguistic justice and racism. She experiments with rhizo-analytic and interdisciplinary approaches of language/languaging.

Katerina Makri is an assistant professor at the University of Thessaly (Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies). Her research interests focus on language and literature teaching and learning online, teachers' professional development through e-learning, blended learning and content authoring with participatory web technologies (Web 2.0), curriculum design and online professional communities. Since 2003, she has been involved in educational research with students and teachers, through state-funded (hellenic), and EU projects, using qualitative methods, content analysis and quasi ethnographic techniques. She has been teaching in tertiary education since 2009. She is also a certified adult educator and vocational trainer, in several disciplines: language learning (Greek as a second language), ICT (basic skills), educational technology (pedagogical use of digital tools) and in different educational settings: tertiary education (under and postgraduate), professional - vocational education (in-service and pre-service), corporate training and technological education. She has also worked as an e-learning and blended learning course designer and consultant and has produced digital educational materials for blended / online / f2f settings.

Eirini Sifaki is an associate professor in cultural theory and criticism at the department of Language and Intercultural Studies, University of Thessaly. She holds a BA in Applied Languages (Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, UK) and a Phd in Information and Communication sciences (University Paris 3 – Sorbonne Nouvelle, France). She has participated in various Greek and European research projects on cultural communication, education and research ethics. She serves as an independent ethics expert of the DG Research and Innovation of the European Commission. Her research interests and her publications involve issues on cultural production and artistic creation, film studies and digital cultural communication.
