Society has set a system where the advantageous get more advantages and the handicapped become more handicaped

Whether one belongs in to the advantageous depends on their luck and not because they deserved it

Some people take advantages of this like hockey players

Kids older by a few months would compete with younger ones and they would have an advantage, they would be picked for training and they would have a higher advantage, they would play more games and eventually make it to the top because of experience and training

Personal Experiences

I was born on Jan 5, and because of that, I am taller than other people, this allows me to rum faster and jump farther than most people which gives me a physical advantage in some sports

I have not tryed out for rep but if I did at a young age, I would have an advantage over others and this may lead me to be picked and recieved proper training, which would lead to a cumulative advantage

My Understandings

My understanding of this is that there is another factor to success than hard work and luck; society

Society could affect the success of people by how they chose hockey players and the like

Society is very powerful but it is no always right, for example, the way they picK athletes can get rid of half the talent of a country

My Beliefs

My belief is that success depends on work and luck but I have never consider the fact that society could affect it, it is an interesting and possibly true idea

Could society be changed so more successful people are created?

Connections

Countrys are like individuals, if everyone was roughly the same but a country had more people, they would expand faster in all areas and this would lead to an acumulative advantage

China had much more people than Korea, Mongolia, and Japan, which led China to become the most powerful country in the area for most of it's history and that in turn allowed it to have many inventions and technological advancements

Biology, successful species develop more species per genus and these species develop and it leads to a large variety of species coming from one origin and that origin has the advantage because it has more species

Gladwell's message is that hard work and experiance is mandatory to succeed and there are no shortcuts and even talent cannot allow one to not have experience

However, one must also have the opportunity to practice and use the abilities.

Society also affects practice, such as providing computers at schoold so people can practice and learn

Right place right time

One must be in the ideal place, so during a information revolution, one would need access to computers like Bill Joy

One must be in the ideal time, so not too old or too young and also at a time when change is happening like the industrial revolution

Personal Experiences

Chess, the more I practice the better I get

I played with people who were better than me and most people in grade 8 which gave me a chance to learn (right place, opportunity, experience)

Ms. Boehlke also allowed me to stay in, which gave me time to practice (right time, opportunity, experience)

I went to a real tournament, which gave me real experience and I practiced for half the year which meant I was prepared (right time, right place, opportunity, experience)

Swimming, if I do not practice, I get out of shape and lose good form, but if I swam everyday for 1-2hrs, there was a visible difference

To be able to practice, I had to live near the community center (right place, opportunity, experience)

I also had to have enough time to swim, which was during the summer when there was no school (right time)

My Understandings

The 10000 hour rule is true but it is more complicated

To get the 10000hrs, one needs alot of opportunities

To be able to use those abilities, one need to have opportunities

Society may provide some ways to get 10000hrs, like Michigan school having computors for students like Bill Joy

To be successful, one needs both experiance and opportunity

My Beliefs

This is true and I can relate to this in many ways see personal experience and connections

One does need both skill and opportunity and a bit of luck, for example, if one has talent for physics but never takes it to an advanced level and one sees a high paying job for a physicist, one would be unable to take it

Connections

Afica has less inventions and billionares than America (per capita), this is because people don't have as much opportunity or time there to gain and use their abilities

Training for anything starts at a young age, for example, soccer, kids play on teams and get training so that they can get better, even people with talent have to train at a young age to get their 10000hrs and still be young enough to do things with it
