Events that shaped English

3000 BC

Various peoples have arrived at different times to conquer the settle. Many of them have left a trace in the English language, but not all of them. The very first inhabitants left physical monuments of their civilization, such as Stonehenge that was built 3000 BC, however these people left no traces of their language.

700 BC

The Celts were invaded by two powerful
groups og people.

The romans

409 AD

The romans had left Britain and took their language with them. The second invading force came from the north-west of Europe.

500 AD

The Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes.

With the arrival of the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, the Celts were forced westwards, into what are today Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

With the coming of these groups we can date the
origin of the English language.

800 AD

The Scandinavian Settlement

Scandinavians came to Britain

England had a Danish king.

1600 AD

William the conqueror defeated Harold godwinson at the battle of Hastings.

The old English broke down and middle english became more similar to the English we see today.

French gave Middle English 10,000 new words.
