How do human activities change the planet?
How do some changes create feedback that affect other Earth systems?
Claim:
Things happening in one of the Earth's systems can positively or negatively affect other systems. For example Rain and water in the hydrosphere can form and erode rock in the geosphere.
More examples of the systems interacting are: Atmosphere-Hydrosphere: Water evaporating from the hydrosphere to the atmosphere.
Hydrosphere-Biosphere: Rain from the hydrosphere will water plants from the biosphere
The Hydrosphere is oceans, rivers, and ice caps
The Geosphere is the land, Rocks, core, and mantle
The Biosphere is Plants, humans, and insects
The Atmosphere is oxygen, nitrogen, and water vapor
Positive feedback is be an amplifying change.
Negative feedback is a stabilizing change
Wind form the atmosphere will blow my golf ball and make me hate golf
How did life and Earth systems coevolve?
Claim:
Life and Earth systems coevolved because the earth is the perfect distance from the sun. This is called the goldilocks condition. The land is also perfect for life to thrive and that's how we have coevolved
If the earth was a little bit hotter than life may not be able to live here.
Goldilocks Condition - The Earth is the perfect distance away from the sun for living things to thrive and the perfect distance from the sun so it can have a lot of surface water.
Since the earth is so perfect for us to live here we have evolved to make it even better for us to live here depending on the location that you are at.
Our earth is the perfect land temp so life can thrive here
In my house there's a goldilocks temp where it's perfect for me just like there a perfect temp range for the earth.
How does water affect Earth’s surface processes?
Claim:
Water can affect surface processes in many way. Water can flood certain places and wash certain places away. It can also carve out areas and canyons. Water can also make new landforms overtime.
Soil is also really important because its mostly how we grow food and if the soil isn't good then plant will have a hard time growing.
The steps of erosion are Detachment of soil, movement, deposition.
Water evaporates from the ground, rises into the atmosphere, condenses into rain or snow in clouds, and falls again to the ground as precipitation.
Soil texture is important because it changes the amount water can hold and how much infiltration it has.
We live in a place with good soil so we can grow plants and crops really good.
Why is carbon important?
Claim:
Carbon is important because it is basically the backbone of life.
Some carbon sinks are: Plants, soil, and oceans.
Sources of Carbon are: Human sources, Fossil fuels, Land use changes, and industrial process.
A carbon reservoir a supply or source of something.
A Carbon Flux is the rate of flow of a carbon.
We breath CO2 and are a source of it.
What is the impact of developing and using energy resources on Earth’s living and non-living systems?
Claim:
It's good that we’ve developed ways of using energy to because it can provide us with electricity. But it's bad because some ways we’ve use the energy but bad emissions into the environment
The energy is taken from fossil fuels and then it is converted into electricity.
Coal, oil, and natural gas are formed from the remains of organisms.
Most of these fossil fuels are obtained by mining
Solution mining creates big caves underground which in time might collapse and cause damage to things above the ground.
There are 3 types of mining which are open pit mining, strip mining, and quarrying.
We have many wind turbines around us so we can produce electricity.
What issues does waste from humans cause?
Claim: Waste from humans can damage the environment and the land. It can also hurt and kill wildlife.
Compostable is something that's rich in nutrients and will help plants grow.
Recyclable is being able to reuse the materials
Biodegradable is able to be broken down
Synthetic material are things that are formed chemically and cant be formed in nature like polyester, plastic, and parts of electronics.
We can reduce the amount of waste we make by buying dish towels instead of paper towels, buying rechargeable batteries, and use canvas bags instead of plastic ones.
A connection for me is, I cause waste by doing a lot of things. I also recycle things
