the first jamaicans were taino indians who came to jamaica in 600 ad.
the maroons
during the spanish period in 1655, west african slaves owned by the spanish escaped into jamaica's hilly interior and pioneered the resistance in jamaica which continued for 200 years. these people were known as maroons.
the british period
the british captured jamaica and retained control over jamaica for ober 300 years.
Independence
in 1958, jamaica was a member of the federation of the west indies and on august 6, 1962, jamaica became a independent nation with dominion status.
