Importance of Textbook
- Textbooks are the primary resources for students and teachers.
- These are used as a guide.
- Textbook will give outline for the course.
- It helps to decide the limitations and depth of the content.
- Textbooks give insight to the teachers.
- It helps to present the content in systematic and sequential order.
- It saves Teacher's time.
- It is a teaching aid to the teachers and learning aid for the students.
- It fosters right study attitude among the students and encourages self study and independent work.
Characteristics of Textbook
External or Physical Characteristics
- The cover page must give the necessary information, i.e. the title of the book, Author's name , Publisher's details.
- The cover page must be colourful.
- Thickness of the sheets must be appropriate.
- The price of the book must be mentioned behind the textbook.
- The class must be mentioned.
- The Graphics must be attractive.
Internal or Academic Characteristics
- The content should be relevant to the instructional objectives of Social Science.
- The content should be up-to-date.
- The selected topics should be properly integrated from the preceeding to the succeeding stage.
- The subject matter must be drawn from practical life situations.
- The subject matter must be divided into proper chapter and units.
- The lessons must be properly divided into sections and paragraphs.
- The approach followed in the book should be suitable to the needs of the students.
- The presentation should motivate children for further study.
- The vocabulary must be apt to the class leve. The sentences must be simple and must be gramatically correct.
- The illustrations must supplement to the text.
- The exercises should promote the spirit of inquiry and motivate the students for further study.
