Why must we support the use of dual language texts in the classroom?

What are some dual language strategies that you can implement that will support L1?

comparing English numbers vs. the numbers in their first language
allow students to write out their ideas in their first language with the use of a graphic organizer, etc.
"Encourage English language learners to use their first languages in the classroom, as well as in homework assignments. This will enhance their development of English language proficiency, support their sense of identity and self-confidence, and promote positive attitudes towards language learning among all students, including English speakers (Many Roots, Many Voices, p. 14)."
Connecting the curriculum expectations to creating dual language books as shown in the Webcast, Dual Language Projects. The example they used was in science where the students wrote a story on their organ system in English. Once they were done they were asked to have another copy but in another language. This was so powerful because this made the ELL students all of a sudden feel needed. These books were read to younger grade levels.
Having dual language books, it's a win win, as the ELL students work on their English skills while also feeling comfortable using their first language

What are the benefits students can gain when teachers adopt this approach

Feeling that they play an important part of the classroom
feeling accepted and welcomed
sharing and accepting differences
recognizes their culture
Increase confidence & self-esteem

How can teachers support parents with understanding the importance of a bilingual/multilingual student?

If parents are seeing that their children are completing work in their first language, this may promote parents to get involved as they may be able to better support them compared to homework being completed in English.
With the use of technology, teachers often communicate with students and parents online. I have used the Remind app and truly enjoyed it. Thinking back I should have considered using google translate to help communicate with some families whose first language wasn't English.
Inviting them into the classroom, as mentioned in the Webcast, Dual Language Projects, the idea of creating a cafe and having other people come and hear the poems the students have written, both in English and in their first language
