15 Reasons why Law is Vital to Society By: Zoha Shafiq

Safety From Altercations: Keeping people away from violence, sexual assault and murder is vital for the safety of citizens.

Harmony in communities: To ensure that society is working together instead of individuals doing what is beneficial for themselves.

Growth- Society cannot grow and improve if we do not create laws based on past injustices and mistakes made by society. (sexism, slavery, etc.)

Rights Versus Injustice: Laws draw a line between freedom of expression and abuse, hate crime and assault.

Economy: Laws help the economy and businesses (e.g. theft being illegal helps stores sell more merchandise than if it was not illegal, taxes, etc.)

Environment: There are laws against certain toxic substances, littering and sea waste disposal that help us keep our community safe and our environment clean.

Accountability: If someone breaks the law, they are accountable for their morally incorrect actions (laws are based on morality) and are given a reasonable punishment.

Equal Job Opportunities: If there were no laws against morally incorrect practices for making money, more people would be human trafficking, drug trafficking and being involved in prostitution. This would be unfair because people with better morals would be working in better ways while others get the easy, inhumane way out.

Civilized Punishments: Laws also help criminals as instead of punishing someone in an uncivil way, in Canada, there is a process when it comes to charging a person and regardless of the severity of the crime, Canada protects its criminals from fatal punishments (death sentence).

Helps Families: If there was no civilization in Canada, people would not make the income they do as of now and wages would be lower (minimum wage).

Morality- To make sure no one is being inhumane in the way they treat people and property and that people do not become victims of immoral actions.

Protect the Less Fortunate: Laws protect disabled people, children, animals and other people who may not have as much of a voice as the rest of us.

Avoids Harm From substances: Illegal substances and medications used only for medical purposes make it harder for people to use and traffic drugs that are very harmful for people (especially easily-influenced teenagers).

Protects People From Discrimination: Certain minorities are still being discriminated against based on race, sex, sexuality and other factors and laws against discrimination of different sorts protect minorities.

Ensure Citizens Are Fulfilling Responsibilities: In Canada, not going to school can be a case that is taken to court after enough absences or a long while of not being enrolled in a school.
