INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
What is IDT
is all about crafting learning objectives at a level appropriate for the knowledge and skills that are being developed, then designing learning activities and assembling resources that help learners achieve those objectives. (Dr. Mark Bullen)
is a discipline concerned with understanding and improving one aspect of education: the process of instruction - to bring about desired changes in student knowledge and skills.
is (between learning theory and educational practice) - a body of knowledge that prescribes instructional actions to optimize desired instructional outcomes, such as achievement and affect.
Essential elements of IDT.
a systematic process.
based on scientific theory.
a practical and useful application of learning theory
uses appropriate technology
Its purpose is to create effective learning experiences
5 Domains / Areas of IDT

Development
- Print technologies, audio-visual technologies, computer-based technologies, integrated technologies.
Utilization
- Media utilization, diffusion of innovations, implementation and institutionalization, policies and regulations.
Management
- Project management, resource management, delivery system management, information management

Roles of an Instructional Technologist of Education institution
Evaluate new technologies to discover new and better ways to enhance instruction
Assist faculty in discovering methods of improving their instruction with and without technology
Create training materials to accommodate the self-learners and provide resources
Manage the implementation of new technologies on-campus for the use of instruction
Conduct training sessions teaching faculty and staff how to use new technologies
Who is an Instructional Designer?
Communicators
Communicate effectively in visual, oral and written form
skilled at building consensus
Data Analysts
Analyze the characteristics of the environment.
Analyze the characteristics of existing and emerging technologies and their use in an instructional environment.
Designers
Design instruction that reflects an understanding of the diversity of learners and groups of learners.
Select, modify, or create a design and development model appropriate for a given project.
Evaluators
Evaluate and assess instruction and its impact.
Project Managers
Plan and manage instructional design projects.
Promote collaboration, partnerships and relationships among the participants in a design project.
