Born in Genoa, Italy in 1451, Christopher Columbus learned navigation and map-making skills early in life. Convinced he could reach Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic, he managed to secure funding from Spanish monarchs Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand.

Three ships and a long voyage

he was able to convince Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain to pay for the trip. He set sail on August 3, 1492 with three ships named the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.

Finding land

On October 12, 1492 land was spotted. It was a small island in the Bahamas that Columbus would name San Salvador.

Fun facts

• The sailor who was first to spot land on the voyage would receive a reward.
In his original calculations, he thought that Asia would be 2,400 miles from Portugal. He was way off. It is actually 10,000 miles away! Not to mention the huge continent in between.
• Columbus brought horses to the new world on his second voyage.•
