Levels of Organization

Biological systems are organized into various hierarchical levels, each with distinct characteristics and functions. At the most basic level, atoms and molecules are the fundamental building blocks of matter.

Levels of Organization

Levels of Organization

5. Cells

Smallest unit of structure and function of all living things

6. Organelles

Specialized structures that carry out life processes in the cell

7. Molecules

Covalently bonded atoms Ex: Carbohydrates, lipids, etc.

8. Atoms

Tiny building blocks of matter that combine to form molecules

4. Tissues

Groups of similar cells that have a common function

3. Organs

Composed of two or more tissue types that perform a specific function for the body

2. Organ Systems

Groups of organs that accomplish a common purpose

1. Organisms

Living individual(s)
