Definition Of Textbook

Prof. Haridikar : " The textbook is totality of items of knowledge , habits , feelings, activities and attitudes."



Importance of Textbook

1. Textbooks are the primary resources for students and teachers.
2. These are used as a guide.
3. Textbook will give outline for the course.
4. It helps to decide the limitations and depth of the content.
5. Textbooks give insight to the teachers.
6. It helps to present the content in systematic and sequential order.
7. It saves Teacher's time.
8. It is a teaching aid to the teachers and learning aid for the students.
9. It fosters right study attitude among the students and encourages self study and independent work.

Characteristics of Textbook

External or Physical Characteristics

1. The cover page must give the necessary information, i.e. the title of the book, Author's name , Publisher's details.
2. The cover page must be colourful.
3. Thickness of the sheets must be appropriate.
4. The price of the book must be mentioned behind the textbook.
5. The class must be mentioned.
6. The Graphics must be attractive.

Internal or Academic Characteristics

1. The content should be relevant to the instructional objectives of Social Science.
2. The content should be up-to-date.
3. The selected topics should be properly integrated from the preceeding to the succeeding stage.
4. The subject matter must be drawn from practical life situations.
5. The subject matter must be divided into proper chapter and units.
6. The lessons must be properly divided into sections and paragraphs.
7. The approach followed in the book should be suitable to the needs of the students.
8. The presentation should motivate children for further study.
9. The vocabulary must be apt to the class leve. The sentences must be simple and must be gramatically correct.
10. The illustrations must supplement to the text.
11. The exercises should promote the spirit of inquiry and motivate the students for further study.
12. The table of contents, Bibliography, References, Glossary should be written accurately.
